York is a hot bed of English history with the stunning York Minster and ancient medieval streets bustling with day trippers. It also has a huge selection of some of the oldest pubs in England aswell as some great tea rooms.  
            Travel 
            Situated about 20 mins from the the A1, York is situated about 4.5 hours from London and conveniently makes a good base if travelling to Scotland for a stop over. Mainline trains run from most major cities as well as National Express Coaches.  
            Accomodation 
            YHA Hostel York - Spacious, friendly youth hostel suitable for all ages on the banks of the river within 10 mins of the city centre with ample parking. It is worth booking ahead if you want a private room. Breakfast is included in the price and is among the best we have come across, full english!

            Things to do 
            York Minster - No trip to York would be complete without a trip to York Minster, its worth paying for admission to the 
 Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt (combined: £7) aswell which has a very interesting audio tour charting the history of the building from Roman times.  
            National Railway Museum - A huge museum dedicated to the history of rail travel, including 
 
              Locomotives and Rolling Stock (including the world famous Mallard & Queen Victoria's train), railway paraphanalia and lots of stuff to entertain the kids. The best part about it is its FREE!  
            Jorvik Viking Centre - Build on the remains of Viking Jorvik (York) this somewhat tacky and overpriced exhibition will pass the time on rainy days  
            Merchant Advernturer's Hall - This ancient hall was 
 built between 1357 & 1361 and is the finest building of its date and type in Europe, well worth a visit if it's open 
            York Model Railway - 
 Perfectly located beside the railway station is this excellent museum focussed around 4 oval systems of Hornby 00 gauge track. With over 320 metres of track and 14 trains running every day, there is sure to something for every rail enthusiast.  
            Bars/Restaurants 
            The Bootham Tavern (Bootham) - Average Sky Sports Pub, no food  
            Black Swan (Peasholme Green) - One of the oldest 16th Century pubs in York, with individual rooms and music nights upstairs 
            Golden Fleece (Pavement) - Ancient Pub with crooked corridors and a ghost aswell! 
            Golden Slipper (Goodramgate) - Another ancient pub divided into lots of little rooms 
            Evil Eye Lounge (Stonewalk) - Cool, cultural 3 level bar/lounge serving cocktails and playing modern music. There are Lhasa style chillout booths on the first floor and internet on the 2nd floor, a welcome diversion from York's history more popular with York's younger clientelle. 
            Russells (Pavement) - One of 2 chains in York serving tasty help yourself Roasts.
